Learning Objectives
- 1Read and write numbers up to 1,000,000 in standard form
- 2Write numbers up to 1,000,000 in word form
- 3Write numbers up to 1,000,000 in expanded form
- 4Identify the value of each digit using a place-value chart
Mini Lesson
Numbers up to one million appear in populations, distances, and large data sets. Every number can be written three ways: standard form (digits only), word form (written-out words), and expanded form (each place value shown as an addition).
The Place-Value Chart to 1,000,000
- The seven place values from right to left: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands, hundred-thousands, millions.
- Each place is 10 times greater than the place to its right.
- Use commas to separate every group of three digits: 345,206.
Standard Form
- Write the digits in order from greatest place to least.
- Insert a comma after every third digit from the right: 1,234,567.
- Example: three hundred forty-five thousand, two hundred six → 345,206.
Word Form
- Name the millions group, then the thousands group, then the hundreds group.
- Use a comma and the word "thousand" after the thousands group: "forty-five thousand, two hundred six."
- Zero in any place is not spoken: 345,206 has no tens, so tens are not named.
Expanded Form
- Break the number into the value of each non-zero digit and add them.
- 345,206 → 300,000 + 40,000 + 5,000 + 200 + 6.
- Skip any place whose digit is zero — no zero addends.
Tip: group digits in threes from the right, then insert commas. Read each group (millions, thousands, then the rest) separately.
Guided Practice
Pick a word from the Trace menu and look carefully — after 5 seconds the ghost letters fade and you write the word from memory. Tap 🔁 Show again to bring the model back, or 🔍 Bigger for a fullscreen practice canvas.
Tip: Say each number aloud as you write it.
